This area consists of mowed lanes and doubletrack. There are some fast and smooth descents from the main cinder path down to the lowland areas. Lowland areas will get soft and sticky. Consider this a beginner development area and/or a place to get some fast and smooth off road mileage: please stay on the doubletrack and mowed prairie paths.
When you park you will see singletrack trails. All singletrack is within State Nature Preserve (http://dnr.state.il.us/inpc/) and by their charter for Carpenter Park is off limits to cyclists. Additionally, off road cycling on the singletrack risks damage to the valued relationship between local off road cycling advocates and the Springfield Park District.
