Going out counter clock wise from the parking lot you are following the Tarbell trail. Good solid XC trail, a little over grown in the summer but what backcountry trail isn't. BE AWARE, the second half of the loop is basically a hiking trail that you are allowed to ride bikes on. Tons of lose rock and shale that is extremely difficult to climb.

A workout for sure, but epic views up at the top of Silver Star! I prefer to do the loop clockwise. You'll have some hike-a-bike during the first 1/3 of the loop on the way up to Silver Star, but then some excellent downhill and cross country trails after that.

This trail is AMAZINGLY bad. It is actually the Silver Star trail (mislabeled on the app and confusing if you're trying to follow signs), and honestly I wouldn't bother doing it. It's either the worst bike or the worst hike you've ever been on, not worth your effort. If you go CCW, most of the ascent is covered by grapefruit to watermelon size loose boulders and is not bike-able. Basically, you'll be taking your bike for a hike. Once you have spent 2 hours hiking to the top, in your glee you'll start charging the wide downhill tracks and probably miss the tiny signless trail that you're supposed to catch to make the loop, and you'll end up in the parking lot 1000' below the turnoff. So you'll take your bikes for another hike back up to the turn off, find that you're 5h and less than 10 miles into a 21 mile day and decide to just ride back to the summit and ride the loose, rocky downhill that you hiked up. It's not any more fun on the way down than the way up. Save yourself some pain, and just ride one of the shuttles in the area like Cold Creek or Tarbells.
