Little Rattler Details
Many of the rides on the Arkansas Hills system will start out with a climb that includes Little Rattler. It is an easy/intermediate trail that climbs out of the S-Mountain parking lot. It meanders up and around a few hills and then meets the spiral drive road. At this point, you can take the road downhill and back to the parking lot for a really short ride (good for someone coming from low elevation). Otherwise, turn uphill and continue on Little Rattler as it climbs up some rougher (yet still plenty wide and not too steep) trail. As you crest a ridge, you lose sight of town. You get a few short breathers as the climbing mellows out and then steepens several times. Little Rattler joins CR 173 (a rough 2 track road) right were Backbone begins. Your options are to take Backbone east to a variety of loop options or head up the loose CR 173 to North Backbone or further still to Sand Dunes, Pauli, or Uncle Nazty for the hardcore folks.
Little Rattler is a good trail to introduce mountain bikers to the Arkansas Hills trails system. Be advised that if Little Rattler is too tough, turn around and head back down Little Rattler. All other trails beyond Little Rattler are tougher. Give it a try. It's a fun and sometimes flowy trail headed back downhill.
Little Rattler is one of the busiest trails so keep an eye out for other users (and rattle snakes).
Make your way to the S-Mountain parking lot. The trail takes off near the Salida Mountain Trails kiosk.
