Pondy Downhill Details
Split Enz to Pondy DH to Pondy New then into the bottom half of Rollercoaster is a very popular sequence of trails.
The initial couple of traverses of Pondy DH are new compared to the steeper original trail which follows the fall line down the hill. The steep sections are prone to significant rain ruts, the worst in the Whakarewarewa forest in fact. Let your brakes off through here and you'll rattle your fillings on the way down.
There are a couple of alternative lines off to the right once the trail starts to flatten out. The first one has a couple of mellow rollover jumps, the second line has three tabletops in a row. They're not particularly gnarly, but the landing transitions are steeper than some on other trails in the forest and they're not in a dead straight line. If you're not an experienced jumper - be safe, take it easy the first time, then build up to stringing them together. Or... you could just avoid them completely by staying on the main line.
After the jumps Pondy New is on your right.
