This is a multi use trail, but it's far enough out that you don't see a lot of traffic from bikes or ATV's. Trail can be shuttled for a straight 3mi dh, but the shuttle is long (about 45min) from one end to the other. I know there are a few guys that ride up this trail, but they're insane. It is not fun at all uphill, and there are much better options in the area for a XC ride, i.e. Bear Creek, Blankets Creek. If you start at the top there is about a mile of uphill and flat before you hit the good stuff. After that there is a 1 mile section of steep loose single track, very similar to what you would see at Resorts like Beech Mtn and Snowshoe WV. That section runs into a double track wide trail that is groomed and super fast, and all downhill. There are so many jumps here you will loose count. Also some very nice berms. The lower area is definitely designed around dirt bikes, but is still just as much fun on a mountain bike. The groomed section is about 2 miles long and runs directly into the parking lot. NOTE: THIS TRAIL IS A BLUE/BLACK AS A DH TRAIL RATING. IF YOU RIDE XC THAN THIS TRAIL WILL FEEL LIKE A DOUBLE BLACK. The trail also is extremely hard to get to because of it's remoteness. It requires riding National Forrest Dirt roads for at least the last hour. Saying all that it is by far the best dh in the South until you hit Beech Mountain. It is well worth the drive if you have the right skills and equipment to enjoy it.

Pull a small trailer with an ATV on it and park at the Windy Gap parking lot. Hook the small trailer up to the ATV and use it to make shuttle runs. Way more fun than taking the road back around. And 8 minutes is a lot better than 45 to shuttle.

Carters Lake DH is better to me. Windy Gap is good, but it is an ORV trail.
