Castejón de Sos: perfect destination for the thrill seeker
In the search for new trails and amazing destinations let's jump into the Huesca region in Central Pyrenees in Spain, on the small village of Castejon de Sos. At 900m high, surrounded by +2000m high mountains this is the perfect place to enjoy any kind of outdoor activity.
First known as a paragliding destination, one of the bests spots in Spain and maybe in Europe, it slowly attracted outdoor enthusiasts that on those days without wind wanted to do something more than hiking.
Fast-forward a good bunch of years and a whole new sport developed mountain biking, and together with it as usual a group of local riders started to discover old trails, started working to recover them so everyone could enjoy it. From those core riders emerged BTT Puro Pirineo a local trail association that nowadays expanded their work to surrounding areas and offer their knowledge to help build and maintain a huge trail network.
Castejon de Sos area has several amazing trails that each on its own could deserve an entire Trail of the Month article, Magic Line, Planadona, or Rabaltueras are just a few. But their most well known trail, the jewel of the crown so to speak, is the "Integral del Gallinero" an 8.5km long trail and 1170m, not for the faint hearted for sure. In general trails in the Pyrenees are technically demanding, all natural hiking trails that are not, as you may be used in your region, well maintained and often used. So be prepared for some rough sections and even some hike-a-bike. Integral del Gallinero has been used on several occasions on the Spanish Enduro Series and the past year 2020 was the starting stage of the Spanish Enduro Championships.
Starting at above 2000m in winter is impossible to do it but you can enjoy all kind of snow related activities of course. Starting 2km section of the trail is fast and alpine like, with a long narrow path following the slopes downwards to the tree line. Don't let the scenery distracts you, losing sight of the trail can be costly at high speed. Once you hit the tree line the real sketchy sections begin, with some slow but serious rock gardens to navigate, tricky switchbacks, and exposed sections. One last section inside the forest, beware of the trees and those 800mm handlebars.
Don’t forget to load up the Trailforks App on you device and help the BTT Puro Pirineo continue to fund future trail builds by hitting the Karma button, every little bit helps.
