When going up by bus from the Funchal (south of the island) or from Faial (north) get off at the Poiso bus stop, from the Poiso you can make several routes, you can start already descending, catching routes to the Funchal, or opt for the north caught the route for the trail Porto da Cruz to Faial. From Poiso can be pedaled up the road to Pico do Arieiro (one hour on a pedal) and then there are long descents from there.
