History: You would be mistaken for thinking this hamlet along the Grand River is a sleepy settlement for commuters to larger cities. It is a vibrant community that includes a local “dry goods” store (Lost Acres Variety – best pies in Ontario in my humble opinion), a B & B and Gift Shop (Ye Olde Bridge B&B) , frequent tourist, kayak/canoe and horse-and-buggy traffic, oh, and the last original covered bridge in Ontario. On your detour around the dismantled CN Rail bridge you will also pass the old West Montrose school house (now a private residence) across from an almost-hidden spring water source, the site of a scandalous 1947 mass shooting and the grave site of a key WWII codebreaker.

The historic Kissing Bridge (where else would you sneak a smooch in the 1800’s on your way home from a date?) is currently celebrating its 135th year since its planning and construction by the barn building Bear brothers in 1881 and is definitely worth the detour.

The G2G Rail Trail has two access points just north of Line 86 on Katherine Street and at Middlebrook Road. If you want to overnight in the area, the West Montrose Family Campground has seasonal and occasional campsites available from the beginning of May to the end of October.
