      Akranes heitir í raun allt nesið milli Hvalfjarðar og Leirárvoga og trónir Akrafjall á því miðju. Nesið skiptist frá fornu fari milli tveggja hreppa: Akraneshrepps að sunnan og vestan og Skilmannahrepps norðan og austan. Á 19. öld fór að myndast þéttbýli í kringum sjósókn og verslun á Skipaskaga yst á nesinu. Árið 1885 var ákveðið að skipta Akraneshreppi í tvennt vegna hinna ólíku hagsmuna þéttbýlisins og sveitarinnar. Varð kauptúnið og næsta nágrenni þess að Ytri-Akraneshreppi en sveitin inn með Akrafjalli að Innri-Akraneshreppi. Ytri-Akraneshreppur hlaut kaupstaðarréttindi árið 1942 og hét eftir það Akraneskaupstaður.
