The Historic villages of Portugal (Aldeias Históricas de Portugal) are a group of 12 villages classified under a 1991 government to restore and promote a series of ancient villages/human settlements important to the history of Portugal.

Located in this region, Great Route 22 (Grande Rota 22) is a long distance path comprised of a 565km walking/cycling loop connecting these villages. It was first introduced in 2000, and reworked in 2014. The full loop is divided in 12 stages, which can be completed in as little as 7 days by bicycle. You can also take a shortcut halfway through the main loop to split it into smaller North or South loops.
