      La ciudad se halla a orillas del Mediterráneo, en una planicie sorteada por una serie de colinas y elevaciones. El monte Benacantil, con 169 m de altura, sobre el que se asienta el Castillo de Santa Bárbara, domina la fachada urbana y constituye la imagen más característica de la urbe. En esta encontramos también el monte Tossal, donde se asienta el castillo de San Fernando, la Sierra Grossa (o Sierra de San Julián), las Lomas del Garbinet y el Tossal de Manises. Entre estas discurren barrancos y vaguadas, algunos completamente ocultos por el crecimiento urbano como las ramblas de Canicia, Bon Hivern o San Blas-Benalúa; otras, de más envergadura, se hallan canalizadas como la Rambla de las Ovejas o la del Juncaret. Al sur de la ciudad hay una zona pantanosa, el saladar de Agua Amarga y al noroeste se encuentran las Lagunas de Rabasa.

      En la línea de costa cabe señalar las playas que son, de norte a sur: San Juan, La Almadraba, La Albufereta, El Postiguet, Agua Amarga, El Saladar, y las de la isla de Tabarca. Entre las playas de La Albufereta y la de San Juan está el Cabo de la Huerta, con numerosas calas: Calabarda, Cantalares, Los Judíos, La Palmera.

      Hay un gran desnivel dentro de la misma ciudad: mientras que el ayuntamiento está a 0 m y se toma como referencia para medir la altura de cualquier punto de España, hay barrios al mismo nivel, como la Playa de San Juan, otros a más altura como el Pla del Bon Repós y San Blas a 30 m, Los Ángeles a 75 m o la Ciudad Jardín del General Marvá y Virgen del Remedio a más de 80 metros.

      El término municipal abarca poco más de 200 km² y destaca como máxima elevación los 1.209 m del Cabezón de Oro.2​ También hay montes de menor altura como las sierras de las Águilas, La Alcoraya, Mediana, Fontcalent (426 m), Sancho y los Tajos, que separan Alicante de las comarcas del Vinalopó. Estas elevaciones son formaciones compuestas por materiales calizos, margas y areniscas. En cuanto a la hidrografía cabe señalar las cuencas del río Monnegre o Seco y de la Rambla de las Ovejas. Destaca también la isla de Tabarca, frente al cabo de Santa Pola y que forma parte del municipio.
