SaveAuburn State Recreation Area is a popular destination for riders within the greater Sacramento Area. It boasts a little bit of everything, from the smooth flowing singletrack of the Foresthill Divide Trail to the loose chunk and screaming speed of Rocky. For most of us, it's the closest riding where there's substantial elevation change.
On a given weekend, you'll see a hodgepodge of bikes - from new riders on budget hardtails to those dentist bikes pushing $12k. You'll have fun no matter what bike you bring out here, though be warned the sharp nature of the metamorphic rocks claim their fair share of low-pressured rear tires.
Busy days lead to a surprising amount of hiker traffic on many of these seemingly MTB specific trails. Keep your head on a swivel and be courteous and most of the time it works out.
For the most part, if you give the trails a day or so to dry out, they will ride well in the winter. This is usually the best time to be out here as the temperatures are manageable, and the foliage is very vibrant. Please remember to RIDE THROUGH puddles. This will prevent un-natural trail widening. If you've decided to ride in the wet, then you've accepted that your feet will get wet.
