Save*** Some trails appear seasonal and are not maintained during the growing months (May-Nov), of note, Roller Coaster Lower, Sprocket/Airport Trail Climb/ MTB Trail, and Rouse as of 8/7/2021. Those trails should be avoided due to dangerous overgrowth that obscures obstacles, snakes, poison ivy, and other critters and all are overgrown with thorn bearing brambles. This is dangerous for riders unfamiliar to the area and recommend trails not actively maintained be removed from trailforks until they are passable. This is unfortunate because several other trails with active riders are fun xc trails with decent climbs and amazing scenery. ***
Known colloquially to mountain bikers as "Bavington" because it is located within State Game Lands 117 in Bavington, Hillman State Park is 3,600 acres of pine-filled woodlands located in Hanover Township, northern Washington County, 25 miles west of Pittsburgh. Hillman connects the Kings Creek and Raccoon Creek watersheds within the greater Raccoon Creek Valley Natural Area.
Bavington/Hillman is much appreciated by mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, cross-country skiers and equestrians for its nearly 30 miles of single-track, maintained by PTAG stewards and volunteers each year. Double-track trails and local dirt roads are also present throughout the park.
Bavington/Hillman's trails can best be described as winding but not too technical, with some roots and ridge riding, and few steep climbs or long downhills. There are four main trail networks which can be combined to provide day-long rides that will please the advanced rider but still be accessible to the novice rider:
Airport Trails (100)
Five Points Trails (300)
Old Airport Trails (400)
Knowltown Road Trails (500)
Bavington/Hillman is the go-to park when it's been raining as its trails tend to be on higher ground and dry quickly. There are no bathrooms or other facilities. Watch out for ticks and errant model airplanes from the park's radio controlled model airport
Note: Hillman State Park lies within State Game Lands 117 and is open to hunting. For more information, call Hillman State Park, c/o Raccoon Creek at 724-899-2200.
