      Nimis è un comune della pedemontana orientale friulana di 2 710 abitanti in provincia di Udine in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
      Terra di vini e agriturismi Nimis è il capolugo del comprensorio comunale.

      Interessante è la sua storia ma vediamo brevemente alcuni cenni riguardanti gli insediamenti longobardi e gli scavi archeologici nella pieve dei santi Gervasio e Protasio.

      In età romana il territorio di Nimis era interessato dal passaggio del percorso che collegava Forum Iulii (Cividale) alla strada consolare diretta da Aquileia al Norico. La via divenne di valenza strategica periodo tardoantico altomedioevale, quando esistevano alcune roccaforti e il castrum Nemas ricordato da Paolo Diacono nella Histotia Langobardorum. Alla fine dell'Ottocento venne individuato un tratto della strada presso il centro abitato. Presso l'alveo del torrente Torre e in altre località furono rinvenuti i resti di edifici con mosaici, un sepolcreto, alcune monete e una statuetta di bronzo.

      Nel 1964 iniziarono gli scavi archeologici all'interno della chiesa dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio la cui titolazione risulta particolarmente diffusa nel IV-V secolo. Furono individuate le fasi della chiesa più antica risalente alla metà del VI secolo. L'edificio era di pianta rettangolare (metri 9,45 x 6,70) con nartece e presbiterio quadrangolare; l'alzato, secondo il Menis, aveva pareti con monofore, soffitto piano, tetto a doppio spiovente forse ricoperto in scandole di legno. La chiesa divenuta pieve, con battistero, era matrice di molte diocesi e in età longobarda costituiva l'edificio di culto dell’importante insediamento fortificato i cui resti furono individuati negli anni Ottanta sulle pendici del Monte Zuccon.

      Verso la metà del IX secolo la pieve di Nimis fu ingrandita, venne eliminato l'atrio, l'aula venne allungata di 6 metri e fu costruita una torre campanaria addossata all'angolo meridionale, abbattuta nell'XI-XII secolo. All'interno della chiesa attuale si conservano i resti del battistero, risalente al 1100, costituito da una vasca battesimale quadrangolare (cm 88 x 75) in muratura con fondo in cocciopesto.
