SaveThe small town of Clarens, often referred to as ‘the jewel’ of the Free State, is an enchanting village full of art, history and adventure. With its breathtaking landscapes and wide array of active lifestyle choices, ranging from extreme sports to more laid back activities, Clarens can appeal to just about anyone.
But the adventure is not only of the physical kind - Clarens has a gastronomic scene second to none as well as an awesome art scene with many studios and galleries dotted around the village and its environs.
Clarens is a peaceful place with plenty of fresh air and majestic views. Pristine dams, rivers and streams ideal for fly fishing - some of the best trout fishing spots in South Africa. Great grade 3 and 4 water rapids for white water river rafting in the Ash River. Horseback riding, golf, archery, bird watching, hot air ballooning, 4×4 and quad biking, hiking and trail running, mountain biking and yes, even tree hugging.
Clarens has an extensive trail network managed by the Clarens Village Conservancy (CVC) as well as many trails on private farms around the town. While the CVC trails are for hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers only, there are also 4X4 and quad bike trails on several of the surrounding farms. Visit Clarens Xtreme to find out more about the trails and to buy trail permits.
