The area between Highway 12 and the Hell's Backbone Road is a maze of deep slickrock canyons, including the Escalante River, The Box, Death Hollow, and Calf Creek. The north half of the region is the Box-Death Hollow Wilderness Area (part of Dixie National Forest), while the south half is the Phipps-Death Hollow Outstanding Natural Area (part of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument). Sorry, mountain bikes are not allowed in either area.
