SaveDenniston plateau is a moody destination 600m above the Tasman sea on the untamed natural wilderness that is the Northern West Coast of the South Island. The abandoned drill tracks which snake their way across the plateau, a relic from the coal mining days of the early 20th century, lend themselves perfectly for mountain biking. There are around 30km of grade 3-5 , well marked single and 4wd tracks to explore. The plateau is mostly comprised of coarse sand stone which grips very well in both wet and dry making the area a great all weather, all season destination. The tracks are rocky and steep in many places, utilising the interesting natural features of the area. There are unique challenging short climbs and pinches which are a great feature to the tracks also. There is a map board at the quarry car park on the top of the hill, or you can call into the I-site, Department of Conservation or Habitat Sports in Westport for a copy of the map and some local information and recommendations for tracks to link up.
