Huge open area split between Gloucester and Rockport. Home of early Gloucester settlement focused on timber before everyone moved to the shores to focus on fishing. Later, the granite industry created quarries big and small in northern tracts by Lanesville and Pigeon Cove. These are now swimming holes and reservoirs for the most part.

Old cellar holes, Babson Boulders, and large glacial erratics dot the woods. Ownership and management of the area has always been somewhat informal - Cape Ann Trail Stewards and Friends of Dogtown are two groups invested in the area and they try to take care of it. The northern section has several tracts owned by Greenbelt and Rockport (managed by Rockport Conservation Commission) that are comparatively well maintained.

But the whole area is big and has a lot of variety. Old quarries, vehicles, forts, homeless camps, people on dirtbikes or 4-wheelers, fire pits, and dumping sites - it's a mixed bag. There are some great sights and great trails in here, but you may hit some not-so-great trails if you aren't familiar with the area.

The forest is very rocky and rough in some areas. Nearly every trail was built before mountain biking, so some trails just aren't worth it on a bike. You are almost certain to find many rocky and technical challenges wherever you go in the area.

There are lots of cruisy or flowy/challenging trails to be found however - just don't be discouraged if you don't pick a great route your first few times through
