SaveGreen Hill Park is a large, historic, urban park in the heart of Worcester, MA. At 480 Acres, it is the largest public park in the city proper. It is a common, mixed use park with little traffic on the trails just away from the busy ponds and Veteran's memorials. Hard, New England granite abounds, with chossy rock gardens, rooty lines and technical ascents - mostly singletrack with a sprinkling of doubletrack.
Under-utilized and appreciated, riding here can be a fun escape from the city and a welcome respite of quiet and nature just outside of the city. The southeast portion of the park features rocky and wider trails that can be quite fun, but the real rewards to be had are the technical ascents and descents of the Ghost and Mill trails, and the long, fast descents of Asylum and others that feed into the Lake Quinsiggamond connector routes. Approximately 5+ miles of singletrack, with more connecting routes to be explored weaving between the main North-South and East-West trail lines.
Lot of history in this park, both of the Green Family, and the Worcester State Psychiatric hospital (to the East). It is also a fun place for families and children, as there is a petting/observation zoo, a playground, baseball field, two ponds and a golf course. Take a moment, and stop by to reflect by the two Veterans memorials in the park to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
As a general note of caution, bring spare tubes if you aren't running tubeless, and a quick patch kit if you are - broken glass and other detritus can be found throughout the park, namely around the old quarry. Use caution if out late as well - the park abuts an urban neighborhood, and it serves as a transitory shelter for more than a few homeless. The main parking lots are generally safe and police regularly patrol along the main road cutting through the parking lot. The further North and East into the park you are, the fewer people you will encounter and the less trash you will see - DO YOUR PART TO CLEAN UP AFTER OTHERS IF YOU CAN, and PACK IN/PACK OUT - there is definitely a trash issue on the most highly-trafficked trails.
