SaveGlenelg Klondyke managed forest of 398 acres feature a mix of hardwood and conifer plantations on a rugged and hilly terrain. The main trail features a beautiful scenic view of a smaller lake on the property, whereas the rest of the trails feature a beautiful forest surrounding landscape. Glenelg Klondyke has great access for physical activities such as hiking, cycling, and during the winter season snowshoeing (off the ski trails), cross-country skiing (groomed by the Glenelg Nordic Ski Club), and snowmobiling on a permitted trail that runs through the County Forest. During the permitted season recreational activities such as hunting is allowed (PLEASE NOTE: please wear appropriate clothing to be visible to hunters on property during these times).
On July 30th, 1962 the Corporation of Grey County had an agreement with landowners to obtain the land which is now Glenelg Klondyke; each property had been released to the county in different durations. Lot 24 (furthest west portion of the trail) was acquired by the county on December 7th, 2000, Lot 25 (middle portion of the trail) was acquired by the county on April 23rd, 1999, and Lot 26 (furthest east portion of trail) was acquired on December 7th, 2000. The history behind these lots in the Glenelg Township began and ranged from 1868 to 1896. Lot 25 had been purchased first of them all with a total of 48 ½ acres from a Mr. Charles Ryan on November 10th, 1868. Lot 24 with 100 acres was then purchased by Mr. Angus McVicar on December 20th, 1895 with his wife which later had 10 children. And the last of the three Lot 26 had been purchased for $300 for 100 acres on September 25th, 1896 by Mr. John Peter O’Hanley. The land behind Glenelg Klondyke has stories to tell with the years that have passed, majority of the land had been used for farming; when Grey County had obtained the land it was then transformed into a managed forest (that is FSC Certified –Forest Stewardship Council) that you see today.
