Hartley is a beautiful park with some great hardwood forests, an open grassland marsh and a large rock bluff. Some trails are fairly rocky and rooty, which lead to some technical challenges, but are not overly difficult. Many of the new reroutes are quite smooth and have nice flow to the design. There are several punchy climbs with enough rocks and roots to make choosing the right line important, but there aren't any lung busters, just rolling hills.

These wooded loops, in a residential neighborhood, include 5 kilometers of double-tracked classic trails. There’s a hilly outer loop and a gentler inner loop, good for families and beginners. Hartley Nature Center rents skis and snowshoes. You can snowshoe on the Superior Hiking Trail, which loops through the park. The Nature Center trailhead is north of UMD, off Woodland Avenue – turn left about ¼ mile after Fairmont Street.

Your Great Minnesota Ski Pass fee goes directly toward grooming cross-country ski trails! If you are 16 or older, you must have a Great Minnesota Ski Pass to ski on groomed trails in Minnesota state parks or state forests, or on state or grant-in-aid trails. Sign your Ski Pass and be sure to carry it with you every time you go skiing. (If you prefer, take a photo of both sides of your pass and carry it on your phone.)
