      El Parque Natural se localiza en el nordeste de la provincia de Segovia, ya muy próximo al límite con la de Burgos. El río Riaza constituye el eje longitudinal del Espacio y, a lo largo de su recorrido de sureste a noroeste, se pueden distinguir tres grandes zonas. La primera, entre la localidad de Maderuelo y la presa de Linares del Arroyo, con un relieve relativamente suave, estando el río Riaza embalsado desde el año 1951. Entre la presa y el arroyo de El Casuar, con una longitud de 5,5 kilómetros, el río se ha encajado en las calizas formando un cañón calcáreo de hasta 150 metros de profundidad y entre 200 y 300 de anchura. Y, por último, a partir de dicho arroyo y hasta la localidad de Montejo de la Vega, el río abandona las calizas formando un valle disimétrico con una fértil vega en su fondo.

      La vegetación que tapiza el páramo es principalmente esteparia, con manchas de arbolado adaptado a la extrema continentalidad de este clima: sabinares, encinares y algunos quejigares. En contraste, el fondo del valle mantiene un soto fluvial muy interesante. Junto a la espectacularidad del paisaje, las aves son las que confieren a este Espacio su principal característica. La presencia de cortados calizos, pródigos en repisas y oquedades de los más variados tamaños, permite el asentamiento de una rica comunidad de aves de roquedo. Por otra parte, el embalse de Linares del Arroyo se convierte todos los años en la principal área provincial para la invernada de diversas especies de aves acuáticas.
