SaveThe Makawao Forest Reserve has been gaining popularity with trail users and the State of Hawaii has responded with improvements to the area by creating the Kahakapao Recreation Area. In addition to the original six mile multi-user loop trail, the KRA now includes a 2 mile downhill track, 2 pump tracks, an advanced dirt jump zone, a beginner skills area, numerous new connector trails and increased parking. Take Haleakala Highway (HWY 37) up the mountain, turn left onto Makawao Ave (HWY 365). Go through Makawao town and turn right onto Piiholo Rd (at the cemetary). Take first left onto Waiahiwi Rd which turns into Kahakapao Rd. Makawao Forest Reserve is located at the end of Kahakapao Rd. From the forest gravel parking lot, up the Kahakapao Trail and around the loop is six miles in distance with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 ft.
