SaveKnuckup Hill is a true gem, providing year-round fun for many different user types.
The north side of the hill used to be known as "Sweatt Hill," and operated for decades as a small town ski hill. You will still find remnants of the old J-Bar that once serviced the hill, plus the chimneys in both the summit and base lodges. Look up, and you will also see the old night skiing lighting towers, on some of the trails. And yes you can still bike some of the old ski trails ... in addition to ski and snowboard them in the winter The Main Slope of Knuckup briefly reaches 50 degrees in pitch, and a few other runs found at Knuckup truly provide some white-knuckle downhill pitch in the winter (while testing your brakes and tires in the summer).
The best way to explore the high grounds of Knuckup Hill is to ascend the fire road, and ride down Don't Sweatt Itt, which is an easy-intermediate downhill trail filled with a lot of thrills, but also approachable enough for beginners. Next, check out Trout Ski Trail and Splat-Man (two former ski runs). If you're ready for a challenge, ride Off The Walls, which is the crown jewel trail of this riding area. It is also a trail that is beloved by hikers, and is comprised by reclaimed and improved sections of old hiking trail. With so much low-tech but lung & quad burning climbing, mixed with a variety of downhill routes, Knuckup Hill is a great area to train locally for enduro races.
Another section of Knuckup Hill, the Trout Ponds area, provides ample opportunity for great local fishing and easy hiking. It also contains some interesting MTB lines, including Sidewinder, Halfpipe, and Superpipe. See that steep ridge on the other side of the ponds? Head there for some unique fun on your bike. That ridge is also used for sledding in the winter by local children. Also, connection to the White Barn Farm Stand is accessible from Knuckup Hill. Graciously, the owners of that land and business have allowed users to enjoy two fun beginner-level trails that traverse their land and connect into the Trout Ponds area of Knuckup Hill. Beginner mountain bikers will enjoy riding the fire roads around the Trout Ponds, which has beautiful scenery.
The Warner Trail passes through Knuckup Hill, and provides some fun advanced-beginner riding. Knuckup Hill is also directly adjacent to its much larger neighbor - Wrentham State Forest. Also close to Knuckup are trails near Wrentham Town Center and the beautiful Wollomonopoag Conservation Area. With so much around it, parking in the large Sweatt Fields parking lot of Knuckup Hill can serve as a "home base" for a large ride with a wide spectrum of terrain.
Please note that unlike WSF, there is no motorized vehicle use permitted in Knuckup Hill. Also, the area closes at dusk, so night riding is also not permitted.
Knuckup Hill is an underrated destination for fat biking. The fire road ascending the hill is plowed during the winter, the skin track packed by skiers is rideable downhill by fat bikes, and the Trout Ponds area is compressed down to a rock hard and smooth surface by heavy pedestrian use.
