Kurveleshi is a cultural and ethnographic geographical region that lies in southwestern Albania. This province lies between the Shushica River | Shushica and that of Borsh in the West of the Vjosa in the North and Northeast and Kardhiqi in the South. The province of Kurvelesh has a total area of about 700 km². It is a mountainous area, built mainly of Cretaceous limestone and partly of flysch, with high and rough relief for the most part, which in Upper Kurvelesh takes on the character of a plateau very fragmented by streams with beds of deep and narrow gorges in the form of canyons (up to 150 m deep), cliffs and abysses (as in Nivica, Lekdush, etc.). There are many widespread karstic phenomena and forms such as: pits, wells, galleries, caves and many karstic areas (Progonati, Golem, etc.), where the main residential centers and agricultural lands are concentrated. Rainwater and heavy snow, through funnels, wells and other karstic cracks, quickly penetrate deep into the ground. This makes, especially the Upper Kurveleshi, limited water resources. The consequence of karst is also the poverty of vegetation, especially in Upper Kurvelesh. The richest is the grassy area with many pastures, where many medicinal plants, honey and aromatic honey (tea, salepi, roses, etc.) are found, making Kurvelesh a suitable place for livestock development, especially the small one (sheep, sheep). goat etc.).

Kurveleshi and mainly the Upper one, from a natural point of view, is a castle from where, to get to its center, in Gusmar, you can enter only through some directions and mainly mountain gorges such as: Bënçë Gorge, Vërmik Gorge, Gryka of Borsh to Kuç and Shuri Gorge to Gusmar and Kapariel Gorge, to get to Golem-Gusmar or even Kreshta Pass. This geostrategic position somehow separates Kurvelesh, especially the Upper one, from other provinces and has favored the armed resistance of the Kurveleshas, but also the preservation of ethnocultural values as autochthonous as possible.
