<note>Not very busy (Monday morning). My first time in this vast area so I thought take the trail to the lake. A mix of wash, hard pack and boulders. A couple of climbs and technical section. Several “hike a bike” sections for me. When I got to the lake end, there was signage that bikes were not allowed — nothing posted at the trail head in La Quinta cove. Didn’t see any enforcement either going or returning (out and back). I was on a Cannondale Moterra with 2.6 tires. Used power on much of the trail.</note>

<note>The Agua Caliente Reservation rangers had two rangers stationed at the trail head warning bikers that the trail was closed approximately 10 miles down when the Palm Canyon Trail travels onto Reservation private property. They now have a sign at the trail head stating that you can't ride on reservation lands. Your only options are to either not ride the trail or go down and walk back up the trail with your bike. So I don't recommend riding this trail until BLM works out some sort of agreement with the reservation or re-routes the trail.</note>

<note>Rode the PCE on 3/16/2025. The PCE trail was in great condition even after rains the day before. However, the PCE is closed roughly 10.8 miles down from the trailhead at the Indian Potrero trail fork by the Indian reservation rangers stationed at the boundary to their lands. Additional rangers are stationed at the PCE trailhead informing riders to either ride elsewhere or take a detour half way down PCE (6.4 miles from trailhead) called the "Dutch Charlie Trail" that heads east up the Dutch Charlie Canyon to connect with Dunn Road to the east (1.6 miles east as the crow flies). There is an easy-to-miss sign (when travelling at high speed; photo of sign attached) on the right side of PCE at this detour location, just before crossing the Dutch Charlie Canyon creek bed. I attempted to take this detour and rode over a mile into the canyon up the creek bed, since the trail could not be located (probably abandoned; no evidence of any traffic up the canyon), but I could not find the way out of that canyon due to steep, waterfall cliffs to climb on the left and right branches of the canyon. I gave up exploring the central branch. (The creek splits into 3 branches about 0.8 miles up the canyon.) I had to return to PCE, ride another 3.7 miles down PCE and locate a hidden cutoff singletrack (at 10.1 miles from trailhead) on the right side that eventually connected with the Dry Wash Trail nearly at Dunn Road. This detour cut the PCE short and replaced the comfortable climb on Dry Wash Trail with an edgy singletrack, making the whole experience less enjoyable. Something will need to be done here to remedy this situation. Sending riders downhill a dead-end trail is unacceptable.

When I got home, I used GoogleEarth to explore the Dutch Charlie Canyon in order to locate that missing Dutch Charlie trail. I was unable to spot any trails up the canyon from PCE till 0.8 miles up where the creek splits to the three branches. I think I may have located some evidence of a seldom traveled trail that climbed the ridge between the left (north) branch and the central one and then follows the ridge heading east, probably to reconnect with Dunn Road.</note>

There were two Aqua Caliente Indian Reservation rangers at the intersection of Indian Potrero trail but they were there just to make sure no one took that branch. <note>Trail was in great shape at least from Pinyon Flats trail down to Dry Wash trail. The section I rode was NOT a black diamond trail. It was blue at most. The trail had some really nice flow sections mixed in with the rocky stuff. Pinyon Flats was more technically challenging than the part of the PCE that I rode.</note>

Portions of the Palm Canyon Epic Trail were acquired in April 2024 by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. Any segments on Tribal land are closed to mountain bikes and ebikes.

<note>The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians received donations of land from Friends of the Desert Mountains and the California Forest Service. In every case on Tribal land, mountain biking is prohibited on trails. At this date, it is unknown if any bike access to Indian Potrero Trail is allowed. I've requested map information from the ACBCI office that has this information.</note>
