SaveMākara Peak is Wellington's premier mountain bike park set in 250 hectares of regenerating native bush.
With over 40 kilometres of world class single track, a 72 metre long suspension bridge, and panoramic views across Wellington Harbour, Cook Strait and the upper South Island, Mākara Peak has something for riders of all ages and abilities.
Since the park was opened in 1998, a group of enthusiastic volunteers have been working in partnership with the Wellington City Council to build singletrack, plant native trees and eradicate destructive pests.
Mākara Peak has everything from high speed machine built flow trails; wide, children and beginner friendly undulating trails; and some of the steepest and gnarliest technical downhill.
A lot of effort has been made to ensure that trails are built to a consistent standard, in a sustainable manner and in a way that compliments the natural environment.
Due to the rocky nature of the hillside, and quality of construction, the trails tend to hold up well in wet weather, albeit offering a more difficult challenge than in the dry.
