One of Encinitas's newest reserves, this oasis in the middle of town offers a brisk hike with a chance of wildlife sightings. The reserve is embraced by houses on three sides, with the lagoon below. For a relatively small open space, the reserve offers the chance to get your legs burning up a steep hill, wildlife that includes endangered species, and a pretty impressive view. Not bad for the middle of town.

Trail head: From Interstate 5, exit at Manchester Avenue, heading east for about one mile. You must turn right to continue on Manchester when it intersects with El Camino Real, which continues straight. Manchester Preserve’s parking area is just before Manchester and Trabert Ranch Road. There is also a northern entrance into the preserve off Landquist Drive.
