To access McGinty Slough, park at the Sag Valley Equestrian Parking entrance. From the parking lot, walk east along the Orange Unpaved Spur on the Sag Valley Trail System. Then walk north (left) along the Red Unpaved Trail. Once you reach the Brown Unpaved Loop, you can walk in either direction to access the slough.
Historically a small wetland depression, the work of beavers in the early 2000s raised the water level at McGinty Slough allowing for fishing.

The slough is named after Dave McGinty, a former Forest Preserves chief fisheries biologist and assistant superintendent of conservation known for his innovative fisheries techniques.

McGinnis is considered one of the best locations in Cook County to spot waterfowl and shorebirds, the 300-acre McGinnis Slough is a hotspot for migratory birds each spring and fall thanks to an annual draw down of the slough’s water level, achieved through a water control structure.
