Molista is one of the 16 “Mastorohoria” (i.e. Villages of the Craftsmen), a group of mountainous villages that are located on the NorthWestern part of the prefecture of Ioannina, a city of 170.000 in Greece. The inhabitants of these villages in the beginning of the 19th century were mainly occupied with the craftsmanship of the stone, building and decorating a series of large scale buildings, bridges, churches, and houses throughout Greece but also in the Balkans, in Ethiopia, in Persia and in the U.S. They used to work in groups known as “Bouloukia” characterized by strict hierarchy and an internal lingo. These groups were hired for the whole duration of each project, forcing craftsmen to leave their homes for long periods of time until each project was concluded. Usually these men would return to their homes once per year and after a short stay they were off to the next project.

The need for the remaining inhabitants of these villages to communicate with the rest of the world as well as amongst them, lead them to developing an extensive trail network. The main trails were stone build and known as “galderimia” (plural for “galderimi”) combined with arched bridges while the secondary routes were mainly mountain paths. These trails and paths, with the passing of time and the development of car roads were abandoned and were only mentioned in the stories of the elderly people of the villages that had been their contemporaries.

In recent years, Molista, as well as the two nearby villages of Gannadio and Monastiri have become an attraction to outdoor enthousiasts who enjoy going "offline" for a while. The friendliness of the locals, the supreme flora and fauna, and the overall scenery provides visitors with a uniqe mix of traits and sets the scene for a memorable experience in nature.
