For a mountain biking immersion into dense forests, colorful trees and an almost sure chance to spot wildlife, bike the Muddy Mountain trail. An excellent option for beginners, the trailhead is unmarked, but you can begin your ride at the green gate immediately past the Rim Campground. Although the trail lacks signage, you’ll start on a main double-track dirt trail, and you can weave your way in and out of dozens of small, single-track trails that forge from the main path.

Without any major elevation changes or steep climbs or descents, beginning mountain bikers can experience windy trails over many different kinds of surfaces including dirt, exposed roots and rocks. Just over halfway through your 5 mile ride, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible view overlooking Otter Creek. As you’re maneuvering through the trees, you won’t find many other people in this uncrowded area, but you’ll likely be biking alongside deer, mountain blue grouse, turkey, elk and other wildlife. Plan to spend roughly an hour biking the Muddy Mountain Trail.
