SaveEste parque ubicado en el municipio de Toluca y Zinacantepec, fue declarado originalmente por Decreto del Ejecutivo Estatal de fecha 22 de julio de 1976, publicado en la “Gaceta de Gobierno” del propio Estado el 29 del mismo mes y año, siendo Gobernador Constitucional el Dr. Jorge Jiménez Cantú y Secretario General de Gobierno el C.P. Juan Monroy Pérez, y comprendió una superficie de 394.96 has. de zona montañosa dentro del Valle de Toluca, abarcando terrenos del barrio de la Teresona y poblados de San Miguel Apinahuizco, San Luis Obispo y Zopilocalco respectivamente.
Por decreto del 31 de agosto de 1981, publicado el 15 de septiembre del mismo año, se le agregaron a la anterior superficie 860.13 has. que incluyeron terrenos montañosos de los municipios de Toluca y Zinacantepec de distinto régimen de propiedad, haciendo en consecuencia un total de 1,255 has., superficie que a la fecha tiene el parque.
El parque Sierra Morelos por su estructura natural goza de variada vegetación nativa, como encinos, tejocotes, capulin, etc., así como especies menores de matorrales, agaves y nopal. Cuenta con una cobija forestal dominante de cedro, pino, radiata, ocotes, eucaliptos, entre otros etc, produciendo un paisaje muy digno de admirarse y aprovechar su oxígeno para purificar los pulmones de sus visitantes.
