La storia e la vita economica di questa zona non poterono prescindere, nel corso dei secoli, dalle vicende di questo fiume: basti ricordare che la perdita del Monastero di Salt fu dovuta ad un'impetuosa piena del fiume stesso.
Il nome Povoletto sembra derivi da "pabuletum" (pascolo) o da "populetum" (pioppeto), infatti nello stemma del comune troviamo raffigurati tre pioppi.
