This region has four major access points.
1. BHNF-Shanks Quarry Trail Head which is located on the north side of HWY 44 roughly five miles west of Rapid City.
2. BHNF-Schroeder Road Trail Head located on Schroeder Rd. three miles west of Rapid City on the south side of Nemo Rd.
3. Log Porch Rd./FS-173 is located roughly seven miles west of Rapid City on the north side of HWY 44. There is a parking spot on the east side of the road at the start of "Bone Up". This unofficial trail head is a short distance past the seasonal closure gate and the last cabins roughly 3/4 of a mile from HWY 44.
4. Norris Peak Rd. is located on the north side of HWY 44 between the church and Fire Dept. in Johnson Siding. This unofficial trail head is located on the east side of the road roughly 1/4 mile from Johnson Siding just a short distance past the Norris Peak Lodge at the start to "The Grave Digger".
