The lower 1.5 miles of Smuggler Mountain Road, a well-maintained dirt road on the edge of Aspen, may be the most popular workout spot in town. The road offers commanding views of Aspen and the surrounding mountains; 1.5 miles up, look for a short trail to the viewing platform on the right. The spot, at about 8,800 feet in elevation, offers places to sit down, catch your breath and take in the scenery. Also at the platform junction: the Hunter Creek Cutoff and access to the Smuggler Mountain Open Space’s singletrack network. Take the cutoff road to explore the Hunter Creek Valley, a.k.a. Aspen’s backyard, a wondrous backcountry destination for hikers and bikers that can be reached within an hour on foot. Most of Smuggler Mountain Road is unplowed during the winter.
