Upper Bidwell Park may be considered more wild than its lower counterpart of Bidwell Park. It is separated from Lower Bidwell by Manzanita Avenue and extends fives miles into the foothills, surrounding Big Chico Creek. As you drive in on Upper Park Road, you'll pass a golf course, the parking area for the North Rim Trail, the Kiwanis Chico Community Observatory, and Horseshoe Lake. Then the trails begin in earnest.

There are over 70 miles of trails, including the popular hiking-only Yahi Trail, not listed, which stretches from parking lot E all the way to the park's North-Eastern boundary.

Upper Park trails can be easily categorized as rocky and unforgiving. Most trails feature large amounts of old volcanic rock and even the smallest fall can tear you up - knee pads are definitely encouraged for all types of rides here. The endless rocks can be a challenge to adapt to at first, but will force you to be a better rider and once mastered, will allow you to ride just about anywhere. Due to the amount of rocks and ungroomed trails found here, a tubeless set up is advised - otherwise, pinch flats are a certainty. There is lots of cross country riding as well as some pretty gnarly DH but no matter what you're riding, a mid-travel trail bike is suggested at minimum.

      Access Info:
Most rides start from or go through the Five Mile Recreation Area. Bathrooms and water can be found there seasonally. From here, it is easy to continue up Centennial Ave to the trailhead for most South side trails. Or, cross the creek to Wildwood Ave and head towards either the North Rim trailhead or the main parking lot near the observatory, indoor gun range, and trailhead for Monkey Face. Water and bathrooms can be found at that main, curved, gravel parking lot as well.
South side trails can be shuttled from anywhere along Hwy 32 up top to the bottom at Centennial Ave & Chico Canyon Rd.
