SaveThe Wellington region incorporates the Capital of New Zealand, as well as the cities of Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua. The hilly nature of the region is the result of centuries of tectonic movement which has resulted in almost endless possibilities for mountain biking. The Wellington Region covers Wellington city in the south, Upper and Lower Hutt valleys to the north east, and Porirua to the north west.
You will find all sorts of riding types from hard core black diamond down hill to epic cross country rides. Most riding is through native or regenerating bush, and mostly on council or regional council managed land. Most trail building is supported by a charitable trust set up specifically to support the local riding area, so be sure to donate to keep the amazing trails in great condition.
There can be some distances between riding areas, so be ready to do some driving. Many are well established and the spread of different areas means not many are crowded. But you can be guaranteed that all areas have decent climbs, you won't find a lift park here. Make sure to have your climbing gear ratios sorted, or good walking shoes if pedalling upwards is not your thing.
