The West End of Colorado is an area of about 2000 square miles with a sparse population of about 2,500 people located between Telluride, Moab, Grand Junction and Cortez. Highways 141, 145 and 90 make up the major transportation corridors into the area with the small towns of Norwood, Naturita, Nucla, Paradox and Gateway being the only population centers. The area lies within two states (Colorado and Utah), touches four counties ( Montrose, San Miguel, Mesa and in Utah, Grand County) and is administered by four BLM and USFS offices. ( BLM-Uncompaghre Field Office, Grand Junction Field Office, Tres Rios Field Office and Moab Field Office ) Over 80% of the West End is made up of BLM, USFS and State lands, the majority being BLM. There are four large tracts administered as wilderness study areas.

Years of mineral exploration, ranching, logging and mining have created thousands of miles of singletrack and two track trails throughout this rugged landscape. The terrain is varied with elevations from 9,500 ft on the Uncompaghre Plateau and the La Sal Mountains in Utah to 4,500 ft. around Gateway. Two major rivers divide the area - the Dolores and San Miguel which join near the old mill site town of Uravan. Many of the rides featured on Trail Forks for the West End are older two track trails. Most ride like singletrack and all will present various challenges when riding or hiking them. There is a growing number of purpose built single track trail systems close to the towns with more in the planning stages.

Lastly. Know before you go. Know about the place you are planning on going by reading the trail descriptions and
looking at the maps to become familiar with the terrain. Much of the West End is considered wilderness. You will probably never encounter another person in the West End back country. Check the weather forecast as it can change quickly at this high altitude. Summer monsoonal rains are common and West End roads and trails can become impassible when wet. Know your own abilities and be personally responsible. People tend to underestimate the tough riding conditions which they will encounter here. Plan more time than what you think you'll need and pack plenty of water and food. Cell phone service is sketchy at best and help is usually a long way away. You will discover that the West End is a beautifully unique part of Colorado. We hope you enjoy your stay.
