Starts out a little lame from the parking lot as an old double track, but it gets a lot more interesting after a turn onto single track. This would be rated as 'advanced' in just about any other Texas State Park. The top section near the bike loops is really nice.

If you do the whole loop clockwise, pay attention at marker 29 on the return. It’s in a riverbed and easy to miss where the trail diverges. Ended up hike a bike Bush walking to get back to trail after going up the riverbed a half mile to far

Why this is called the lower “sunset” trail when the park closes at 5pm I’ll never know. Funner than I expected after the easy start

Trail Cardiac Hill
The name is deceiving, it won’t kill you. A multi-directional XC trail. Several trail deviations aren’t on the map, they all meet back up together. Some of them are alternate routes or easier ride arounds. No major obstacles or terrain features.

An easy connector road that helps access different sections of trail in the area. There are a couple steep climbs as you move further north.

I used this as an up trail to access Newman’s trail. It’s a tough uphill, made tougher by a herd of cattle with several large Bulls. The Bulls lowered their heads and moved towards me. It was a convincing way to get me off the trail and to circumvent the herd. Other than over protective Bulls, the trail isn’t to difficult.

Trail Lazy Cow
A very easy XC trail used by bikes, runners and casual hikers. Very flat and featureless. Perfect for people who are just getting into mountain biking. Can be ridden by all ages. A few easy miles and a nice connector trail to other areas of the trail system.

Trail The Maze
Multi-directional XC trail. A good alternative to the Old Tin Mine Road. No major features or obstacles. Climbs and decent in both directions.

Old Tin Mine Road is mainly used as a climbing trail to access the trail system. It’s used by bikes, runners and casual hikers of all ages and abilities. While it is primarily an up trail, it can be a very fast down trail as well. Rough rock sections make for an aggressive fast down trail. CAUTION! There can be lots of foot traffic at times be careful and courteous of the uphill and foot traffic.

This is a fun little down trail. It can be ridden as an up, but beware, there are descending riders who will be going faster. The top section is rocky and loose. With your suspension properly dialed you can smash through the chundery rocks with some decent speed. Like all the trails in the North Franklins, it’s really not very steep. There is a section with a huge boulder on your left. Immediately after this boulder the trail drops into a deep sandy section. To avoid this, there is a small trail to the left that goes up and around the “sand pit”. The bottom section is a sloping downhill graded two track where you can open up the speed if that’s your thing.

Trail Sotol Forest
Having ridden this trail in both directions, this trail is definitely an XC trail. It’s not a downhill in either direction. There are no jumps, drops, gaps or berms. There is no flow. Beat to ride with your rear suspension locked out. It’s got many rock gardens and some technical short climbs. A decent XC if that’s your thing.

Basically a gravel road. Featureless. Steep climb/decent. If you ride this trail you are either on it for the view at the top or the cardio punishment. Terrain doesn’t make this a black diamond, the continuous uphill grind does.

Trail Mad Cow
A fun down trail, where you can push your speeds and find a little flow. No jumps, drops, gaps, or rock rolls. Several rock gardens and loose gravely corners, one short wood bridge. An intermediate trail that can be enjoyed by most riders. The lower section levels off and is very pedally.

This whole place is some of the worst riding I've seen in 25 years. The fee taker at the gate doesn't have a bike trail map and says that all the trails are hike and bike. That's a lie. There are little or no signs and one for some if the trails in Trailforks. El Paso is off the list.
