Knebal Springs may perhaps be THE classic ride in the 44 Trails system. It seems to be one of the first trails to be clear and open in the season—these days as soon as May if it's been a light winter. It’s a great, classic old school singletrack ride that seems to have a bit of interest for everyone at every skill level. It may be be a bit of a push for beginners, but experienced riders will love the descents and be challenged by the climb on the backside. Except for some short rocky sections and some small root/brake bump combinations on the descent, most of the trail is pretty buff and non-technical. The great thing about this zone is that you can easily access many rides from one parking area.
The recommended direction of travel is counterclockwise, primarily because the Knebel descent is a scorcher; you'll have less fun and be in everyone's way if you ride it the other direction. The initial climb from the trailhead is occasionally steep and loose, but it's short and you'll soon be rewarded with a blazing-fast three-mile descent that is one of the best around.
Once you hit the low point and cross the Middle Fork of Fivemile Creek, it’s about a four mile climb out through the Knebal Springs campground and up to a little meadow with views of Mount Hood at the top. Pace yourself—the beginning of the climb hurts but it's not all like the first five minutes. One you reach the top you might be able to catch views of, in clockwise order, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mr. Rainer, and Mt. Adams. Have a bite and enjoy the scenery before opening up your suspension and enjoying the short descent back to the trailhead.
Keep your wits about you and your fingers on the brakes as Knebel descends into an equestrian camp. Bells are recommended and please always dismount to the downhill side of the trail when you encounter horsey folks.
