Really nice climb. The top section before it starts heading back downhill gets very steep and rocky, can hit Kaibab/Yavapai to bypass if needed.

Rode the full loop CCW from Templeton. Was skeptical about CCW being the preferred direction, lots of staircases to go up, until I started descending north of Hiline... then it made sense. Really fun end to the loop!

I’m not really sure why I’m seeing so many comments saying that the climb is really technical and difficult. As a double black, riding this trail for the first time I expected the climb to be pretty gnarly but was really surprised to see it’s was actually pretty mellow (for a double black) I’ve been riding for roughly 3 months (with a background in motocross) and can damn near clean the whole climb in sections of course. I think there are many single black trails in Sedona with much harder climbs and I think the reason this trail is so popular because the climb is relatively easy compared to how fun fast and long the downhill is. My opinion is that the double black rating comes from the exposure and the downhill. If you’re iffy about it I would suggest going with at least 1 other person but there’s nothing that’s extremely difficult about this trail. The grip here is pretty good, the views are fantastic, the downhill is fun and if you’re not comfortable with sending everything on hiline you can absolutely walk these sections. Overall this trail is extremely fun and I now know why this is one of sedonas more popular trails.

You can’t believe everything you read on the internet. Honest review from a few BC Baddies who work 9-5s but hit the trails and the beers pretty hard. Up:chiller. Some exposure but nothing you can’t walk. This trail is literally full of 60+ y/o hikers but they will definitely tell you you’re brave so that’s a plus for Hiline. Down: starts chiller, you will be on a high horse and think you’re sick. There’s a canyon that opens up the gnar but again, nothing you can’t walk. It’s only about 300 m of spice then it’s all gravy. If you’ve got bike control skills, you’ll be fine!

As an average rider I think this trail has a very hard climb but a reasonable downhill with only a couple of hardcore sections and not much exposure as described. If in doubt, go for it.

Climb is technical but enjoyable; it will really test your power and balance. The descent is puckering for a few short sections and then mellows out into some red dirt flow. Expect big, steep, chunky lines on the descent portion.

I enjoyed it and hated it at the same time! Enjoyed it because the views are insane! Hated it because too much hike a bike for an intermediate rider like me. I fell twice on the technical gnarly DH sections. I guess you’ll enjoy the trail if you are good at technical climbs with rocks everywhere. I’m not.

If you're on the fence about riding this trail, ride a couple of the blacks (slim shady or made in shade). If you can ride those pretty comfortably then you can do the majority of hiline. I rode it solo and I think I'm an advanced-intermediate rider, however I walked down most of the super steep stuff at the end. But up to that point it was a blast. Exposure wasn't as bad as I expected, definitely some scary sections but it was never a straight drop, if you fell you'd probably be able to grab a tree (or ). Watch some videos to get an idea of what it's like.

Can’t believe that of all trails in Sedona, this was made one-way for bikes. It works great in both directions and is commonly used to get to Hiline, and is a more entertaining climb than Templeton for that purpose. If anything, Grand Central should be mandatory downhill only.

This is my first commentary in Trailforks. I'm an older, advanced female rider. And this trail deserves my two cents. First, oh yes it is a double all day if you rode the whole trail. There are ample opportunities to f-up. The challenge is well worth it for the massive accomplishment anyone will feel afterwards.

Agree with comeownnah. More of a blue trail with a few brief intermittent black sections. Super fun in both directions. I usually park at absolute bikes and pair this trail up with Little Horse, up to chicken point and then turn around come back. Slim Shady is a very enjoyable and moderately challenging climb when ridden north to south.

Early January, 2022, most of this trail is in decent, rideable condition, though there are patches of mud, a couple of which probably should be walked. Some of the mud has turned small bits of the techy rocks a bit sketchy in places, but nothing dangerous. There are spots of ice in standing water, which should melt out in coming days.

What this guy's said. All you're doing by sandbagging folks and saying it's not a double black, is clogging up the trail with more beginners, who will be HAB most of the fun parts. In Sedona, this is certainly a dbl black. Boast to your friends if you have any, or Facebook, not on trailforks. No one cares how much you supposedly shred on here.

A steady climb / traverse for the first mile or two before reaching good elevation and some stunning views. The trail comes to a view point over both sides of the hill and it's quite hard to see where you go from here, I had to check GPS.
After this point you start to descend and it's fun until you hit the super steep rock sections that had a lot of loose dry dirt on, too much risk versus reward for me on a solo ride so I walked it. After this the trail gains some flow again and it feels good to be on more forgiving ground!

A good trail to tick off the list but it is quite natural and risky in places, not many places to land a helicopter up there for medivac either. Bare that in mind.

A good trail to tick off the list

Do you know the secret inside joke about Hiline? You are supposed to say it's awesome; that it's difficult but all rideable; a little steep, but not too bad. If you comment otherwise, someone will reply to your comment with a comment of their own and say that you just suck at mountain biking. So there you have it. Now you know the inside joke. The locals meet up for drinks and rate this trail high, to keep out-of-towners off of the good trails. Don't get me wrong -there are some really fun sections with amazing views. However, at least 42% of this loop (Hiline, Templeton) requires hiking a bike. The other 3 hours were on the bike, off the bike, on the bike, off the bike. I wouldn't consider myself a bad rider either -but half the trail is absolutely gnarly with huge consequences for failure. If you are someone that likes sessioning extremely difficult downhill rocky sections, you might enjoy hiline. If you are an advanced rider just looking for a good ride, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

I think we need to remember that a big reason for these comment sections is to help out our fellow MTBers make decisions on what to ride or not to ride. To all those saying it’s not so bad, it’s not a double black, easily walkable, etc are doing the largest percentage of bikers a disservice. If you’re an experienced DH guy rocking your sick new enduro, sure go for it. But for the vast majority of riders, your 1-2 day a week weekend warriors, have no business being on this trail unless serious exposure and HAB is your thing. The climb is very techy and the last series of downhills are anything but rideable for all but the most experienced riders...and are even a very difficult HAB. For most riders, there are so many other trails in Sedona on which your time is better spent. This is one of the few double blacks in Sedona for a reason.

Great trail, the steep rocky chutes at the end definitely make it deserving of a double black but are a lot of fun if you have a slack bike and the skills necessary. The first part of the downhill is fast and a lot of fun too. Uphill is technically challeo and I wasn't for enough to clean everything.

Fun trail. Would recommend riding South to North, starting at Absolute Bikes for a HiLine or Templeton/Easy Breezy loop.

Gonna be that guy and say it's not a black, but it's fun and fast. You can take some B-lines to add spice to taste.

Hardest features are techy climbs and rock rolls, nothing that should scare away an intermediate rider. Would recommend to anyone.

Really fun trail. Great chunky climb in the beginning. Then you can catch your breath on the traverse. Just a couple sections were exposure is an issue, but keep your eyes forward and you'll be fine. The descent was awesome. Super chunky. Riding this trail blind was a blast. The descent is the only double black portion. Speed is your friend if your an experienced rider. I just tried to float the rocks and cleared it pretty easily. Baldwin was a blast too when turning this into a loop. Heads up.. there's usually a group walking lines or hanging out on top of the descent. I gave a couple polite hollers and they let me through. Looking forward to making an even bigger loop with this one in a few days.

Always this coming from the east. Prefer Easy Breezy for it's fun beginning section rather than the ups and downs of Templeton west to east. But I'm not knocking Templeton at all. It's great riding with excellent views. Skip the switch backs to the river for a shorter ride. But Buddha Beach and the excellent Bauldwin are not to be missed, even if you have to hike your bike up a 1/4 mile of steep trail (90% of which is ridable on the way down).

This is actually my preferred climbing trail, connecting to Coconino to get to the top of Slim Shady. I haven't done it yet downhill (south to north) because, well...Slim Shady is right there! Of of these days I'll check it out. Looks super fun banked flow.

It's a bummer that this one is so short - it's a fun semi-technical route that has some nice flowing sections and decent scenery. I normally ride it downhill from Yavapai Point town to Templeton (which is black, but the section of Templeton between Hermit and Bell Rock Path is more manageable for inexperienced riders).

Rode this trail a s a connector from Slim Shady to Eazy Breezy, so rode it east to west. Loved the down hill portions. There were a couple of fun areas to session and a nice techy climb at one point. The views were amazing and the overall trail is in great shape but was crazy dry today. I would love to ride this section when it is nice and tachy.

Great trail and description is pretty spot on. This was my first time on this trail and it was very trail and the rock was pretty slippery. Running down through the washes was a blast. The rock rolls were fun and the chunk in them is fantastic. Has its mellow spots and its hairy spots, so be prepared for a mix of both. Speed definitely helps on certain points of this trail.

Hiline has a small section of techy rock garden, but the rest of the trail is easy and fun. All of it is definitely doable and/or walkable. I'd say it's probably the best red slickrock riding in Sedona. It has become really popular with hikers - not sure why... - so watch your speed. I wrote up a blog post about the 8 best trails in Sedona (in my opinion) and Hiline is one of them twowheeledwanderer.com/posts/my-eight-favorite-mountain-bike-trails-in-sedona-arizona

This is a fantastic fun trail. The climb is tough with a lot of difficult sections to try and ride clean but it is doable! The downhill is amazing, rough and fast! You can lap the trail by riding Baldwin, Templeton, Slim Shady, HLT...turn right at each intersection. The descent on Baldwin (first right after HLT) is also very fun.

Agreed with above, this section of Slim Shady is most fun from Yavapai Point parking down to Templeton. If you want a fast flowy route: start at Yavapai Point parking, take Slim Shady "North" (this blue trail from red marker to green) >> Templeton >> Hermit >> back up to Yavapai Point parking >> Slim Shady "South" (black diamond). Super fun rip!

This trail has become reasonably popular with hikers, so be heads up especially on the weekends. As noted above the trail is 90%+ doable for "average" riders who are comfortable with the exposure, and imo, the exposure is worst where the trail is easiest. Only the last ~1/4 mile will have the majority of riders walking.

like everyone says. Start at Slim Shady. One of the most gratifying climbs for being a challenge but every section is rideable... you just gotta focus. From the climb's summit until dropping in to the final descent the trail is just fun and beautiful. For 99% of riders I think they'd talk about how much of the descent they could ride, not how fast or anything. Piecing together what you're comfortable riding and adding a bit more each time you ride this trail is probably a common strategy... and that day you're totally feel it you might get all but one section that I need to see someone ride to figure out the line. one of my top ten favorite trails anywhere!

Beautiful trail. Like I've seen mentioned, the blazes on the downhill are guides, not necessarily the best line. Tough part of the climb isn't long. Middle traverse really is beautiful. Not much true exposure; just keep your eyes on the trail! Down hill portion has a handful of techy spots that explain the double diamond rating. A little dusty but not bad. I rode some of those and got to save some for next time : )

Perhaps a double black in spots but I thought it had great flow and the steeps added some great thrill. Totally rideable, so much traction on the rocks and dirt here.

Took this West to East on the way from Hiline and Baldwin with a short stop at the creek. Very hard and steep uphill near the beginning that you have to walk your bike up. Later on when it snakes around Cathedral rock is a very nice, fast, and wide bare rock trail(relatively flat). After that you'll find some short, fast, and flowy descents. But it doesn't last very long because as you approach the road crossings(which are tunnels that go underneath AZ 179)it's all uphill with some short flats. Recommend it as appose to Easy Breezy.
