Fun old-school trail. Narrow and a bit rough but pretty fast. Optional jumps are really big but there is also a few blue features. Fun skinnies as well.

Wow, have some love for a classic handbuilt cross country trail. I don’t usually comment, but had to given the negative reviews on this one. All of the Ridgebacks are challenging trails with roots and rocks, punchy climbs, and some tight spots between trees. They are not meant to be flow trails, but if you ride them often, you will find some flow. Over the years they have been given ‘lots of love by CMBA, and are one of the few trails in the area that use boardwalks to avoid swampy areas. It’s a solid blue cross country mountain bike trail; you should ride it.

Not very well maintained. The boardwalk is falling apart. Rooty with punchy climbs. Beats the alternative I suppose.

I’d have to agree that for being what’s supposed to be a mountain bike trail, it’s the worst trail in the area. CMBA has not given much love to this trail over the years. More exposed off camber roots than ever. However it is a necessary evil coming down bobcat, so what you do?

Use caution after a rain, or you’ll end up in the trees like I did. If you’re an XC diehard with some decent tech skills you’ll like it. Otherwise, you’ll hate it.

Super chunky and rough- not overly technical tho, more so just tight. maybe 2 seconds of “flow” on this guy. Fun new loam section near bottom. Diving board drop is fun also, but that’s about it.

This trail has an identity crisis, it wants to be a DH trail for a very short and steep descent, then basically turns into a blue xc trail. Easily my last choice in the whole Moose/Prairie network.

I wouldn’t try riding this on a weekend unless you go early (leave before 8:00AM). It’s crazy busy and people will not slow down for you. Plan a shuttle or go with a couple of friends.

Really nice trail. Has some tight, steep, janky turns and a couple very steep, but relatively short, sections. This was the first black trail I was able to ride through without dabbing, so I consider it a bit easier than trails like Special K and T-dub.

Never had more fun on a climb. Steep, rooted switchbacks and some tech climbing make this earn its black diamond status. If you spin circles, not pistons, then you’ll still have legs when you reach the top.

To the riders who helped me during my stroke on July 11th 2020. Thank you so much. Thank you for trying to get me out of there on your bike and stopping your ride. You called the rangers and then EMT came and drove me to foothills hospital. I don't remember what you all look like or names but I will anyways remember how helpful you all were. Thank you all again. And I how to see you on the trails again.

I rode down Hotlaps up Pneuma and it was awesome! Some good root features and awesome corners to practice on for me. The trail is in good condition. There is a bridge that is wide, but would recommend walking if you’re not comfortable with a big drop...there’s a quick climb after it as well so would get some speed to stay balanced and climb clean up.

I concur, this is one of the best technical climbing trails. Some people hate this trail and prefer to ride the gravel road. I prefer to ride this up to the top (past Special K), even if I have to push my bike up the boulders in a couple of small steep sections. Way better than sucking up gravel dust when trucks speed past you. The technical switchbacks are just awesome!

Initially I would have tended to agree more with Hizzity- I was pretty disappointed in R2 as an alternative to Tom Snow. I've come around now to actually enjoying it on it's own terms as a useful, and yes, fun (ish) connector.

Just to counter the ‘worst trail in the area’ comment in case visitors get the idea that it is not a quality trail. It has rooty sections but is decently fun with a few smaller climbs. More importantly it is a good connector to get to bobcat and ridgeback 3 and 4. If you do all the ridgebacks it makes for a decent out and back.

A great climbing trail. The trail is consistently challenging but enjoyable up to the intersection with Special-K. After that it gets very rocky and is a little beyond my abilities as an intermediate rider. The very last section becomes a downhill that is very rocky and was beyond my comfort level at points, especially since I was riding alone.

This isnt a wet weather trail. The top km will take your mere 35% traction on the sharp jagged rock, moss, pine needles and bring it down to a mere 5 or 10%. That being said, special k is a good rip on when the sun is out. Happy hucking guys!

this trail must have changed a lot from this 2019 comment, as it's fine running the suggested north to south direction.
The second half descent has steps & roots, ending with the board walk.
If you want more challenge than fun ride up hill roots from the south boardwalk end of trail. A difficult technical uphill section is expected on rugged mountain biking trails.

If biking, best to go left at trailhead and push your bike up a steep hill but enjoy the rest of the trail down. But if you want to climb and climb some more with a somewhat messy steep horse trail at the end, then go right at trailhead. Mud holes bog you down at the low points, just where you want to get a head of steam up for the next hill, you have to slow down/stop at the mud holes. This seems to be more of a horse trail, path doesnt appear to be used much by bikes.

If you feel like pedaling up for a lap on Race of Spades or 7-27, this is a nice alternative to get you there instead of riding along the highway. It’s a multi-use/horse trail so not super designed for biking but it gets you where you need to go.

Bear Closure - Tom Snow Trail from Mountain Road to Moose Loop
July 24, 2018
Effective Date: July 24, 2018 until further notice
Where: Tom Snow Trail from Mountain Road to Moose Loop
Why: Bears feeding on carcass

The sign that shows the closure is not well marked, A small notice that has a map is posted at the entrance of Tom Snow from the Mountain Road. We looked at it and thought it was in the South direction and proceeded on the trail going North. We encountered yellow closure markings by Ab parks at the base of the large hill and some of us encountered a strong smell. We turned around and retreated back up the trail.

Also worth noting that, while it is listed as blue here, the trail signage reads as green. This makes sense in the context of the area as it is a noticeably easier trail than other blues in the Moose area. Something to keep in mind for newer riders tackling the Moose blues for the first time.

As intended, Family Guy does a great job bridging the gap from more XC-oriented riding in the K-country region to the DH specific trails at Moose Mountain. A good starting point before moving onto the more intermediate trails in the area.

Trail Family Guy
Also worth noting that, while it is listed as blue here, the trail signage reads as green. This makes sense in the context of the area as it is a noticeably easier trail than other blues in the Moose area. Something to keep in mind for newer riders tackling the Moose blues for the first time.

As intended, Family Guy does a great job bridging the gap from more XC-oriented riding in the K-country region to the DH specific trails at Moose Mountain. A good starting point before moving onto the more intermediate trails in the area.

Trail Family Guy
Family guy is quite tight between trees with plenty of small rocks to navigate. This is not a beginner blue trail as you can gain speed quite quickly but must stay on a narrow dusty path with a steep roll down the mountain on your right side (when going downhill). Again, if you stay slower and under control you can manage past some smaller rocks on the trail but this really is for more advanced riders. We saw a family of 5 coming up who were apparently going to ride down and I couldn't believe it.
Anyways, you better have good brakes and strong hands (unless you have hydraulics) becau because you'll be on them most of the ride.

It's one of the easiest and simplest MTB trails in the area. And who rides without hydraulic brakes these days?

Easy hike and short loop, Close to Calgary (1 hour drive), good for families and beginners, there is a long hill if you go clockwise. There isn't any awesome view! just trees.

Trail Pneuma
First half going up to 727 is nice and easy single track. After 727 gets a steeper and a tad more technical. Overall a great climb beats the road unless your shuttling!!
