Many of the wooden features are falling into disrepair or are closed completely, wonder why Silverstar is not maintaining them?

I rode this a couple of days ago, and it seemed like there was only a single wooden feature that was closed on the whole trail? (The teeter totter.)

What an incredibly fun trail! Features and skinnies are very well built and I felt very confident that they would end well, which they all did.

Rode both last summer. LOTS has better views, is more technical and has more of a true downhill. Beowulf is longer (depending of course on how you finish and start LOTS), beautiful in the woods, very well built and is more XC styled. I found Beowulf physically more challenging (climb out at the end on a very hot day) but technically much easier. If Beowulf had the climb at the start and descent at the end it would be much easier than LOTS in my opinion. I rode Beowulf early season and LOTS late season so it isn't apples to apples either. If you are very fit you'll probably find Beowulf easier by all measures.

@gasman5: Awesome & thank you. I also multi-day guide in the Chilcotin so I don't think it is going to count as a hard day out for me unless I ride it on a 30ºC+ day!

It sounds as if it is more of an Into the Mystic style buffed trail for the most part rather than the more raw tech single track of the LOTS (Lord of the Squirrels for @shammond) descent (especially below LESS which gets far more traffic).

It does seem like not being able to buy the pass the day prior and start early (especially if one is not interested in the chair) is a bit of an oversight.

I lived on Silver Star for a summer and there was not that much traffic on the cross mountain trails at any time of the day let alone at 8 or 9 in the morning, but maybe it is busier these days.

Anyone ridden Beowulf who has also ridden LOTS - effort comparison? I can ride LOTS from village in 4 hrs. Trying to ride safe without carry extraneous gear or water especially as there appears to be a creek (bottle refill) at the bottom of the loop. Thanks in advance.

Awesome loop! Fun and smooth single track. Very well maintained. Climb wasn’t nearly as terrible as I dreaded - long and friendly switchbacks most of the waySmile

Rode August 30, 2020. This was my first time at Silver Star outside of winter. Two things: I feel the cost of trail pass was well worth it - great maintenance of the Beowulf loop. Also, this is doable for even a mediocre rider like myself. Not too technical at all except for a couple of fairly steep downhill switchbacks getting into the bottom. We were a total of 3 hours 40 minutes on bike, plus another hour plus of rest breaks. So around five hours from parking lot round trip. Great satisfaction having done this ride with a substantial backpack in tow. Be prepared - unlike many other rides you get the candy first here, and then you pay after!

You guys are correct, it is black due to the distance and remoteness, this is why the start and finish segments which can be ridden as out-n-backs are kept as blue.

Agree with comments here. Green would be more appropriate than black. Marketing and logo are cooler than the trail. Trail seems like it was built to be multidirectional. My gps clocked 1150m, 3 hr round trip. Pros. Trail should last a long time, was in primo shape, long descent (in hz kms), pleasant climbing grade. Cons, mellow dh blast along contours, slow tight switchback repeat, finish with a climb, no epic alpine views / visual reward. 3/5

the part that is rated a black is no harder than the blue sections. it is really only rated a black because of the distance and the fact that you are in the middle of nowhere with no reception. so if you are in good shape but don't think your mountain bike skills are good enough to ride a black you will be fine.

I've been riding/racing all over Canada and Eastern US for two decades and I've never ridden a better continuous XC/AM trail than Beowulf - by a long shot! It's that good.

Amazing flow, no surprises, good trail markings and LONG! My Garmin shows around 45 min of descending at 20-25kph. Not really that fast in an open DH, but feels fast enough on smaller catwalks with blind corners (ps: stutter bumps before a blind corner typically signify a sharp corner, otherwise trust those awesome builders).

Of the 32km, I saw only two corners that didn't have a berm LOL... and some of this trail is in remote woods! Even the climb had berms, often with a well placed little roller right before to build some speed. No clue how much time & effort it took to build but made props all all involved!!! IMO this should be an IMBA Epic.

The 3 of us are advanced Expert-level riders and completed the loop from the village in 2:46, a bit shorter 2.25 when timed from Silver Shack. I can see 4hrs for intermediate riders. The climb isn't that bad, the grade is very do-able, just pace yourself. Tow of us ran a 32:42 with 29er and had plenty of gearing.

If you're in the Kelowna area, Smith Creek and Rose Valley are both nice, but Beowulf really does set a new standard. Bravo!

What a beautifully built trail! Flowy downhill seemed to go on endlessly, and the uphill was designed so you have some breaks, and aren't always in the granny gear. Once you are mentally prepared for the "backend-loaded" ride climb-wise, you should really enjoy the ride. Technically this is pretty blue, but the distance justifiably makes it a black ride.

Well, to be honest, I wasn't all that thrilled with the trail... The climb out is very well built and very nice to ride, but it is 1400m of climbing, which is a big day. I'm all for a big climb, but I like a good payoff in an awesome descent. Do not expect that here. I had to pedal and put my seat up a LOT on the downhill as it was all momentum sucking switchbacks the whole way down with very little flow.

Such a shame given that the DH trails at SS are among the best anywhere. In a place like Fernie or Golden or Revelstoke or even Kananaskis/Bragg you can link together 35k and 1400m and are rewarded with some amazing descents. Next time I'm at S.S. I'll just enjoy their amazing lift access trails or xc trails closer to the hill...

We were 3.5hrs of moving time, about 4hrs total, not really pushing it.

The Singletrack 6 is doing their final day at Beowulf in 2018 - but I can't think of anywhere on the trail that would be worthy of a timed descent - they'll probably tack on 15km and get a cool trail on the hill....

The climb out of Putnam Creek is challenging, and fairly relentless - at least until the Aunt Gladys lookout (approx. 7 km from the bottom). Many of the switchbacks are out-of-the-saddle climbs, and there are a number of sections on the climb that require serious effort.

Average riders should be prepared to suffer a bit on this section of trail. Take advantage of the nice rest spot where the trail crosses Putnam Creek to refuel before you start the uphill.

I'd second the suggestion to bring some chain lube on the ride. It's seriously dry and dusty in there right now (late August).

I rode it today, went from the village, up Silver Shack then did Beowulf back to village. Took me 4h 24min. Honestly I found it hard, that's a long climb back up. I'm just an average xc rider though. I passed a few people and a few passed me. I think it all depends on how strong a rider you are. Take lots of water I only took a liter and it was all I could think about the last hour! Enjoy!

Finally ride it! 4h ish with a chairlift ride.
Word of advice if you are going to be the first person to ride it in the morning prepare to eat a copious amount of spiderweb. Very dry is an understatement, the climb section is so dusty it's like riding inside a vacuum. It make many climbing section difficult to get good grip. Even if I oil my chain before the ride, my drivetrain start squeaking as soon as I start the climb back. I ride in dusty places but it usually takes a week to get that dry. Bring oil. And a lot of Water. Great trail. Never really challenging.

The "average" group seems to do it in 4.5-5.5 hours and with a wider range of sub 3 to 7hrs. If you get a 2 lift pass, you can maximize your down, and both start and finish with a downhill while getting rid of the time it takes your to climb Silver Shack.

3h seems very fast. I don't think I can do it in that time. Others seems to be around the 4.5 mark.

Hey I did this today with a buddy. Our first time. Under 3 hours from the parking lot (climb up Silver Shack) then Beowulf loop back to the truck. Super epic trail! Such a great ride almost all singletrack. I rode a hardtail and never "ran out of bike" at all. The descent is super fun. Overall LOVED the ride.

The lift might cut half hour from that I guess? Maybe someone else will chime in who did it that way.

Has anybody ride the whole thing yet? How much time does it take from the top of the chair, back to the village?
