Rode this 6-19-24 from Windy Gap to Quaking Aspen. Much of the trail burned, badly in spots while in other spots it burned just as ground fire leaving full forest canopy. The views are definitely more open than before. There are about 30 downed trees on the climb up from Windy Gap to Slate Mtn mostly on the switchbacks up above Windy. There are about 60 on the descent down to Quaking Aspen, spread throughout the trail. Some are very big (3-4ft) and laying along the trail. Debris is the other issue - lots of branches on the trail. I kicked the larger debris off the trail, but there is still lots left. Along the ridgetop south of Slate Mtn the trail does get hard to follow in a few flatter spots where there is no bench cut, and plenty of debris on the ground. Someone had been marking the trail with orange flagging tape on the climb up (where it is not needed), but they seemed to have run out where the trail gets hard to follow. You can pick the trail back up just keep looking ahead. I'd call the trail open at this point as it is passable, but expect to be on and off the bike hopping over trees a lot. The tread is in pretty good shape. Adventure ride.

I'm too old for this s#!+ man! Conditions are 'in' if that's fair for this kind of terrain. Upper half is way over my pay grade. Group of us with some very skilled guys (more skill than me)...that also walked a lot of the worst. Lower half is just candy! Burgers and live music at Ponderosa helped the healing.

Lots of downed trees covering the trail, and significant snow cover on higher, shaded slopes.
