This route highlights the best trails within the Midland and Whipple Trail Systems in the most efficient and downhill focused fashion.

The route starts off at the Midland Trail system's upper parking lot, after a short warmup on Bacon Strip you will blast down Django, before a quick climb back to your starting point. After another visit to Bacon Strip you will head towards Sausage Link and Bacon Bits in the west to east direction.

The route repeats Sausage Link and Bacon Bits (aka "the breakfast meats trails"), however you will be rewarded as the trails ride completely different in each direction, providing entertaining jump features and great flow in each direction.

After riding the "breakfast meats" trails in the west to east direction you arrive at the routes showcase trail Unchained. This almost 4 mile gem has a little bit of everything, short flow sections, technical climbs, steep rock slabs, rock gardens, kickers and rolls. Signage along the way provides moderate vs expert skill level challenges.

Next you will now climb the upper portion of Django to gain access to Midland trail which brings you back to the "breakfast meats", however now you will be enjoying the playful features available to you in the east to west direction.

Now your ready to start your descent down into Buena Vista via the Whipple Trail system. You will start off down Fistfull of Dollars before splitting off to the right onto Ramsour trail. This techy and punchy cross country style trail will keep you entertained with unique rock features along the way.

The routes final test piece is Broken Boyfriend South trail, which splits off to the right after crossing CR 304. The trail has several sections many consider more challenging then any feature on Unchained. Once you reach the northern variant of the Broken Boyfriend trails, you will be rewarded with a little more flow and the final descent into BV and hopefully some Eddyline pizza and beer

If you want amazing flow with jumps, gaps, high-speed, berms to shralp, avoid this trail. Pure jank. This trail was built like they did ‘em in the 90’s. Sure wish they could build a true machine built long black flow trail trail in BV.

I think this trail crew just randomly throws flags out then connects them to build these trails. Zero flow, speed killing grade reversals, and some seriously tight random turns that do nothing more than make you shift all the way up and down your cassette constantly.

This trail is sick! I mostly ride DH and Flowy stuff, but i understand that this trail is not that. This trail was built good for what it was neant to be. Definately takes skill and balance to get up some of the techy uphill sections. I respect that. I loved the big rock slabs on the black alternate sections. Props to the Trail builders, thats hard work. Thanks

Can’t say I enjoyed this trail too much. It gives the impression that it’s going to offer some sustained speed or tech in spots, but it’s always a brief experience followed by what feels like an endless series of switchbacks. And despite the elevation profile being downhill, it perceptually felt like I was riding uphill the entire time because of it. To each their own I suppose.

Flat turns and confusing alternate lines. This ain't no flow trail. There are some fleeting moments of flow that are snatched away by some silly rock feature. I don't care about riding between two big rocks! No one cares! The terrain is so cool. It's a pitty this trail doesn't take full advantage.

This trail is a total tease. The moment the trail hands you some speed, it snatches it away. If your into uphill berms, flat turns, janky G-outs, super tight switchbacks for no reason, and contrived drops with no run out: this trail might be for you. If you're looking for jumps, berms, and transitions: keep looking.

I rode it south to north and thought it was a great workout. Lots of short sections of technical climbing through rocks, that had me going back for a few do-overs. Not much in the way of drops/airtime, but it still had me paying attention and smiling when I wasn't hurting from yet another short, steep, tricky and powerful climb.

Fun trail with some really good trail design that works in the natural features in a great way. The signs clearly mark the blue vs black options. And there are a lot of those options, so you really get to choose just how hard you want it to be. I rode it east-to-west and thought it rode really well. I especially liked the 8 (?) tight switchbacks up through the rocky part.

I have mixed feelings about this trail. I found it unnecessarily too circuitous and too many ups and downs that dampened my impression. I did all the double black diamond segments clean on first try and that was the only fun part for me on the entire trail and the rest 90% of trail was not my style of riding. I am sure many people will enjoy it and I think people who build the trail were either cross country minded or enjoy cross country riding. Much respect to people who build the trails! However, not for somebody who is looking for speed, air and downhill.

I strongly recommend not riding this trail north to south as it is mapped. This trail was clearly built to be ridden south to north. The south end is a pretty smooth climb all the way to the top and all the technical features beyond that are oriented south to north. Learn from my mistake!

Great trail. For best results ride it from northeast to southwest. Trail forks shows the trail flowing uphill. The trail is definitely a black. There are some high risk/high consequence features.

Without signage I found the best bet was to take the high line when the trail forks for the harder lines. I’d almost rate this trail more of a black, some super fun steep rock moves that if you’re more intermediate, it won’t make this trail as fun for you.
Super fun!

it is challenging to find any flow on this trail. The moment that I find some speed it is stolen by a steep climb or hairpin turn. This trail feels like a missed opportunity.
