This trail is overused and now it is full of roots and rocks. Basically not safe to ride with any speed as there are too many obstacles on the trail.

Rode morning of Jan 2. Second tracks up. Long stretches are badly drifted with mashed potatoes consistency snow. Basically anything with no shelter from a south wind. Upper part near Merlin in the forest is decent

Jan 2, morning
Snow too soft. Constant momentum interruptions by hikers or coming to a halt on 3/4 of the hills due to sinking or being pulled into ruts.

Best to stick to low elevations this week with the warmer temps.

Counter clockwise has a lot of climbing. A few wet muddy sections on the west half.

Not the most exciting ride, trail though the woods. The trail is in good dry conditions on the east side to Long Distance after this it's boggie in placed probably as dry as it's going to get until it freezes.

If you want a quieter ride at the weekend use the trails to the south of the carpark. Rangers Summit yesterday was dry and in good condition.

You can ride Snakes & Ladders either direction, but East to West is by far the most popular. If you do ride it West to East (the Ladders & Snakes segment on Strava) you will cross paths with a lot of people who are not expecting you. Be careful!

Descent from Ranger Summit is in great shape, a couple of water puddle/bomb holes lower down, but the climb to ridgeback is a greasy, slippery mess. Two trees down across the trail in the last JM of the climb.

Icy patches for the first km then it clears up nicely.

Road up Braggin to Merlin Loop. Totally doable on skinny bike; might be more work than it’s worth on a fat bike. All the snow/ice sections (which are mostly on Braggin) were rideable. Prepare to get very wet and dirty!

Logging road section between S and L and Mountain Road has been at least partially reclaimed, so may not be in decent rideable shape anymore. I've done a longer version of this route a few times by continuing up Snakes and taking RB3 and Tom out to Mountain Road, and throwing in a loop of Merlin while in the neighbourhood.

We ran across a black bear and her brown coloured cub this evening at about 6:45pm. They were on the edge of the trail approximately 500 meters up from the intersection with White Tail (100 meters up from the cut line). Mom and cub ran quite a way down the trail before heading off up the slope towards long distance. Make sure you have your bear spray! Trail was dry, dusty and fast.

I did the loop counter clockwise with my wife. I think it would be better to have longer descent and shorter steep up.

1. Please walk around the three very short closed off sections west of the bridge. They still need time to dry out.
2. Please avoid the entire trail if it's rained or snowed. Unless the ground is frozen.
3. Leave space in front of the next rider on the down. You don't want them holding you up as you hit endless berms.
