This route marks a complete out & back with some loops in the campground area.

In the southern third of the route, make sure to follow the route onto River Road instead of trekking through the overgrown forest recovery area. Sign posts mark the detour.

The middle third retains the most water after rain. I recommend the route two full days after heavy rain to give it a chance to dry out.

Trail Cabin John
This section from River Road to Bradley, continuing North to Democracy is not quite as challenging as the section from River Road South to MacArthur. The entire North section from River Road all the way up to Goya drive is very similar with regards to climbs and not technical. Most of the harder climbs and switchbacks are Between the 495 overpass south of River Road down to MacArthur Blvd.

The previous comment should have referred to the 495 overpass, not 270.

The first section starting from MacArthur Blvd up to the 270 overpass consists of the more challenging ascents and switchbacks. Most of the climbs are easily managed, but a few are fairly steep with switchbacks that I end up walking, but I’m not a very strong pedaler so…It’s a very beautiful section, only lightly traveled by hikers and dogs.

One of the most challenging sections of the Cabin John trail with some steep climbs and switchbacks. You may find yourself walking some steep sections.
