Corto y agradable recorrido que discurre por ambas márgenes de la Garganta del Pico, en las cercanías de Cuevas del Valle. Antiguas callejas de piedra nos adentran en el corazón del castañar, rodeados de agua, sombra y frescura.

Destaca El Castañar, la flora del castañar, los paisajes... Algunos tramos son especialmente sombríos y agradables en verano. Un recorrido por los fondos del valle más frescos de esta zona del Barranco de las Cinco Villas. En otoño las setas pueden ser un aliciente, y en invierno las cumbres nevadas son un perfecto marco para el castañar sin hojas.

En el recorrido podemos ver los castaños más grandes de esta localidad. Probablemente alcancen un siglo de edad. A medida que envejece el castaño se va quedando hueco. Los huecos pequeños los utilizan las aves para hacer sus nidos. Si son más grandes pueden servir de madrigueras a las jinetas. A veces se forman auténticas cuevas, que pueden servir incluso para refugiarse de un chaparrón.

El castañar está lleno de vida, una vida dirigida por manos humanas, por las mismas manos que levantan los muros de mampostería, que no sólo sirven para sujetar la tierra que necesitan los castaños: su gran cantidad de huecos sirven como casa y refugio de aves, reptiles, anfibios o pequeños mamíferos.

Los prados de este castañar funcionan como una esponja de baño: en primavera y verano se riegan frecuentemente. El suelo absorbe el agua y lo retiene para liberarlo poco a poco en todas las fuentes que podrás ver en el camino.

Castañar de las Huertas is a 2 mile less popular easy route located near Avila. This hike only route can be used both directions and has a easy overall physical rating. This route climbs 610 ft with a max elevation of 3,373 ft then descends -614 ft.
