PLEASE NOTE: Larrabee State Park is extremely popular with families hiking, dog walkers and equestrians, so please be extra courteous to all trail users while practicing for the enduro. Also, Cleator Road is open to the public, so always expect vehicle traffic on it.
Expert / Pro Race Stages:
1. Upper Chuckanut Ridge Trail and LEFT down Galen’s Step.
2. Lower Chuckanut Ridge (finish at Dan’s Traverse)
3. Raptor Ridge Trail
4. Double Black and Double Down Trail.
From Larrabee campground, follow the signs and go directly across Chuckanut Drive and up to the Interurban Trail. Go RIGHT on the Interurban trail and then go LEFT (up) towards Fragrance Lake Road next to the sewage ponds. NOTE: You can either take the trail next to the sewer plant or go through the Clayton Beach/Lost Lake parking lot and go LEFT through the gate.
Stay straight on Fragrance Lake Road and keep going PAST (left) one split in the road and also past the Fragrance Lake turnoff until you hit Cleator Road. Then, turn RIGHT on Cleator road and climb up to the Cyrus Gates Overlook parking lot. There is a quick push up on the LEFT side of the parking lot (directly across from the viewpoint) that goes to the top of Double Black Diamond and the Upper Ridge trail.
Race Stage 1- Upper Chuckanut Ridge to Galen’s Step
Always technical, sometimes weird, the Upper Ridge has a couple of short punchy climbs combined with some rocky tech moves. From the top of the mountain, go down (riders LEFT) the Upper Chuckanut Ridge and take the LEFT turn down towards Cleator Road. If you get into a big section of hike-a-bike, you’ve missed the LEFT turn. This stage will end ~100 feet before the road.
From the finish, riders will turn right on Cleator Road for .5 mile and take a right hand turn onto the Lower Ridge Connector and climb up to the Lower Chuckanut Ridge Trail. There is a beautiful West-facing viewpoint of the San Juan Islands and Chuckanut Bay that is worth a quick stop. This stage will start after a steep singletrack climb where the trail flattens out to a fantastic East-facing viewpoint of Mt. Baker and the Twin Sisters.
Race Stage 2 – Lower Chuckanut Ridge Trail
This will be a sprint stage through some tough rocky / rooty sections. It begins at the big, flat Eastern viewpoint on the trail and has a couple of initial punchy climbs before it flattens out and goes into rocky tech moves. Follow the trail down the steeper, rocky section into the 90 degree right hand turn onto “Dan’s Traverse”. This stage will end along Dan’s Traverse ~100 feet before intersecting with the Lost Lake Trail.
NOTE: ALL Right hand lines along the cliffs will be taped/blocked off along with any potential Euro cut-throughs on the switchbacks near the bottom.
Riders will go across North Lost Lake Trail and do a short, technical climb on Salal trail. After a quick, technical descent, continue to the right past Lower Salal (aka, Hush Hush) and continue down the Salal trail until reaching the Hemlock Trail. Go right on Hemlock and immediately take another right up Huckleberry Trail. This climb is steep for the first .5
mile is an old road grade and may require some hike-a-biking for riders. Follow this trail until reaching Raptor Ridge Trail.
NOTE: The South-facing Raptor Ridge Viewpoint is ~100 yards uphill on the trail and is worth stopping to enjoy for a quick rest stop.
Race Stage 3 – Raptor Ridge Trail
The Raptor start is just downhill from the Raptor / Huckleberry intersection. Raptor Ridge will be a flowy xc oriented stage with a few punchy climbs and tight switchbacks to navigate. The finish will be just before reaching the North Lost Lake Trail.
After completing Raptor Ridge Trail, go LEFT on North Lost Lake Trail heading South towards Lost Lake. Follow the trail and stay right as it becomes South Lost Lake Trail and continue heading South. At the Rock Trail intersection, riders will dismount their bike and HIKE-A-BIKE this entire trail uphill and past the DBD intersection until they reach the Cyrus Gates Overlook. NOTE: Racers who have enough time and energy, there is an option to swing down to Lost Lake for a quick dip in the lake.
IMPORTANT: The Rock Trail is a beautifully built hiker trail that goes past glacial erratic’s and sandstone cliffbands. The WMBC has gained permission to go UP this trail for this race. While most of this trail is steep and requires hike-a- biking, it is MANDATORY that everyone hikes the entire trail – even on the 3 flat or down’ish sections. Please observe this during practice as well. There will be at least one course marshal on course during the race and if anyone is caught riding their bike, they will receive an automatic Disqualification. Additionally, always yield to any hikers you see on the trail....they have the right of way.
Race Stage 4 – Double Black Diamond to Double Down
From the top of the mountain, go down (riders RIGHT) the Top of Double Black Diamond. Just before the exit, go LEFT at the Y on a newly routed section that crosses Lost lake Trail. Follow this section down to Fragrance Lake Road. Continue down Fragrance Lake Road for 200 feet and take a RIGHT into Double Down. Double Down contains several rock rolls with optional lines that will give riders easier/harder lines through those sections. This section will end just above Fragrance Lake Road.
After completing Double Down, riders will take a RIGHT immediately after exiting to Fragrance Lake Road. This will connect to the Interurban trail where riders will go RIGHT for 200 yards and then go LEFT downhill and cross Chuckanut drive and back to the Larrabee Campground. Please pay attention when crossing the road here
