Trail Chuck Wagon
Rode today on Christmas Day in the morning. It’s currently pretty loose and chunkier than I remember. Some sections are a little washed out, but it’s still one of my favorite trails in western Sedona!

Fun and varied spicy blue trail. It’s a great progression trail for building tech climb and descent skills for intermediate bikers. Enjoyed riding the tech ups as practice for the other black trails in the area.

I guess I’m in the minority, but I’d consider this a black trail. I’m an intermediate rider and there were about 4 or 5 areas I couldn’t clear. Add in some tough uphill rock garden climbs, narrow twisty turns thru trees and slickrock exposure makes this, IMO, a black. Nearby blues, Aerie, Cockscomb, etc are much easier.

Trail Mescal
Beautiful trail with amazing views. I don't agree with the blue rating, either this needs to be black or Aerie, Cockscomb, Rupp, Girdner, Chuckwagon need to be green because there's a very clear jump in difficulty. Quite a bit of technical climbing and exposure.

Trail Aerie (Lower)
I rode this trail, am an intermediate biker and the lower part of Aerie was a fun and flow-y section with just a few rocks and some nice flow. Make sure to ride from Cockscomb for the downhill part.

Trail Mescal
This trail is only worth riding for the aesthetics. The trail is an intermediate (at best) and marked as such by the signs around the route. There are a few short punchy climbs but otherwise it’s unremarkable. Unless you are looking to take an inexperienced rider on a visually appealing trail, its not worth it.

Trail Chuck Wagon
Super fun trail, longish, with intermediate challenges. A surprise favorite.

Trail Mescal
Views are epic. Total fun slickrock with some exposure. A bit of hike a bike for beginners/intermediates in places, but not to be missed if in the area. Was serenaded by a bagpiper! darkislepiper.com

Trail Mescal
I think this is one of the most beautiful and unique trails in Sedona. It runs along the base of Mescal Mountain and a good portion of it is on red slickrock. There are some techy sections, but they're easily walkable if you don't feel comfortable. I wrote up a blog post about the 8 best trails in Sedona (in my opinion) and Mescal is one of them twowheeledwanderer.com/posts/my-eight-favorite-mountain-bike-trails-in-sedona-arizona

Trail Aerie (Lower)
It’s got a little climb but it is gradual. Good loop with cockscomb.

Trail Dawa (to AZ Cypress)
Decent little connector trail. Hard pack dirt. Easy.

Trail Aerie (Lower)
The rocky section that I see people complaining about is fun as hell and rewards the fitness to ride a few gears down from granny. Riding South to North is the fun rocky climb, then rolling until getting a nice quick descent to Cockscomb. At that point the trail completely changes attitude and becomes a roller coaster of tight natural berms and rollers. I have ridden this each time I've come to Sedona, ofyen in both directions.

Trail Aerie (Lower)
The western end suuucks. Just endless rocks on the trail with no rhyme or reason, especially bad if you're trying to climb it. The eastern half is much smoother, great views as well.

MtbSince84, the Hiline is double black and the Llama is blue (I'm pretty sure).

Beautifuly carved trail for first 1.5 miles. Flowy and smooth for Sedona trails. Then climb a rocky ridge and descend

Hoo boy, it does seem that overall the Sedona trails are over-rated in terms of difficulty. Almost all are given a single-black rating. Bit of a distortion, IMO, and might turn people off. Sure, a trail like Llama might be single black if you want to clean every foot of it. But an intermediate rider will be able to ride and enjoy most of it, and more importantly won't be freaked out be any of it. Compare that to Highline, which is a seriously difficult trail, with quite a bit of exposure and risk if you want to ride it all. Seems wrong for those two trails to have the same rating.

Not sure how this trail got a Black Diamond rating. Its basically funn single track with the occasional rock garden.

Trail Chuck Wagon
Agreed. To be sure it's not an easy trail (plenty of little challenges), but I'd call it intermediate, especially for Sedona. It's the first trail I ride when I go there - good, fun warmup for the rest of what Sedona has to offer.

Isn't the east/west section at the far north side called Gunslinger?

Not any more. I think when the FS adopted these trails into the system a few years ago, they merged the two trails into one and called the whole thing "Chuckwagon".
